Hand made continental Bread, Cakes and Pastries
We are a speciality bakery that started in Bellerby, near Leyburn, in the heart of one of Yorkshire's most beautiful dales - Wensleydale. We opened in July 2007 working out of a traditional farm kitchen, and we've now moved to a new premises were we produce original recipe cakes, speciality continental breads such as olive and sun-dried tomato loaves, biscuits and puddings - all really tasty, and healthy too!
Many of our recipes can be provided as gluten-free - call us if you want to discuss that further.
All of our baked goods are hand made using organic ingredients wherever possible. Everything is locally sourced, and even our more exotic ingredientslike almonds and chocolate, sugars and dried fruits are bought from a Yorkshire-based co-operative that supports Fair Trade and ethical sourcing.
We really hate to use lots of packaging, but because you can't balance your cakes and bread on your heads - and anyway, it rains too much for that in Yorkshire - we recognise we have to give you bags and boxes to keep our yummy stuff safe until you get home. So, we have spent considerable time sourcing environmental packaging - which is surprisingly hard to do! All wrapping is biodegradable cellophane, all aluminium casings can be recycled, and all our paper packaging is either recyclable or made from sustained forests. Our kitchen is run off green electricity and all travel for delivery is carbon offset.
New Organic Bakery opens in Leyburn
Following the success of our home-based bakery, and the seemingly insatiable demand for our breads and cakes, we have now set up a dedicated bakery in Leyburn Business Park in Leyburn - just near the Chocolate Factory.
Our GRAND OPENING was on Saturday 26th January and the Rt Hon William Hague MP attended to cut a specially made giant loaf. Which wasn't just our mad idea - it's a tradition when opening bakeries on the continent. Honest.
As part of the move we have switched to being fully organic for our breads, and almost all of our other products. So we'll only be using the best, healthiest ingredients in all our goods, with no nasty additives, preservatives or other bad stuff. We are undergoing an organic accreditation scheme right now.
As part of the expansion we have now employed a Master Baker. That means he's really good at baking bread, and not just normal white and brown but lots of speciality breads from central and eastern Europe and even from America. With 30 years experience he's gathered recipes and skills by working around the world including Hungary, UK, Canada and the US.
We also have a great new Patissiere (pastry chef to you and I...) who is highly skilled in cake decoration and sugar craft. She can produce truly amazing cakes... you'll have to see them to believe them. This means we can now offer specialist bespoke cakes for weddings, birthdays and other events, as well as our highly acclaimed organic cakes and tarts.
In addition the team will include a shop assistant (she's the nice smiley one who serves you bread and cakes, as well as our organic coffee and sandwiches. And because we keep getting lots of interest in our bread, we expect to need a delivery driver and a second baker very soon - contact us if you are interested.
As always you can order from this website or over the phone, and collect from the shop in Leyburn. Alternatively, for trade or large orders, we can arrange special delivery.
Winter Treats
We've added some new specialities ideal for enjoying on these dark and damp Winter evenings. Look out for our Fruit & Nut Chocolate Nougat and hand-made Rum, Fruit & Nut Truffles - perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Traditional seasonal cakes include Panettone, Mulled Wine & Apple Cake and Harvest Grape Cake. But there's lots more in the shop, so come and see us. And preferably, don't eat breakfast before you come...
